In May 1993, Maggie Keswick Jencks was told that her breast cancer had returned and was given two to three months to live. She joined an advanced chemotherapy trial and lived for another 18 months. During that time, she and her husband Charles Jencks (writer & landscape designer) worked closely with her medical team, which included oncology nurse, Laura Lee, now Maggie’s Chief Executive, to develop a new approach to cancer care. She had the notion that cancer treatment environments and their results could be drastically improved through good design. In order to live more positively with cancer, Maggie and Charles believed you needed information that would allow you to be an informed participant in your medical treatment, stress-reducing strategies, psychological support and the opportunity to meet other people in similar circumstances in a relaxed domestic atmosphere. In November 1996, the first Maggie’s Center opened in Edinburgh and what Maggie had planned became real. “Little” does not describe what has happened in the 16 years since her death: her idea has taken off. Today, there are 17 centers up and running. The existing centers have tremendous architectural prestige (Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster have all designed one). But they are about far more than architecture for architecture’s sake. Above all, they remind us that it is not frivolous to care about design. All of the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centers offer a new approach to architecture and health. These centers are perfect example of how design can help recovery. Without any further ado let’s look at 10 Incredible Maggie’s Cancer Caring Center Designed by Renowned Architects.
